CHM 1032
Professor Ramon Lopez de la Vega
Welcome to Chemistry 1032
This is a course which relates chemistry to everyday lives and the topics which make up the news. It is our hope that after taking this course the student will be more aware of the chemistry that is going on around them and within them.
The first half will include the introductory aspects of Chemistry, including chemistry as a science. The second portion of the course will concern itself more with the chemistry of the environment, the human body and the medicinal aspects of chemistry. This course will cover chapters 1-20 in our textbook.
TEXT: Hill and Kolb “Chemistry for Changing Times (13th edition) you may also use any of the older editions (editions 10-12) however the problem sets and chapter pages referred to throughout the course are those of the 12th edition. It is up to you to correlate the edition you choose with the current edition.
There will be four examinations counting 100 points each. I do drop the lowest of the four examinations. If an exam is missed for any reason it will be counted as your lowest grade and it will be the one that will be dropped. I DO NOT GIVE MAKEUP EXAMINATIONS. All examinations are given in the multiple choice format. If all three of the midterm exams are taken and you are satisfied with your grade at that point, taking the final examination is optional. You should strive to achieve this as it will relieve your burden during the final examination period allowing you to dedicate your time to other courses.
