Okadaic Acid
Okadaic acid (OA) is produced by several marine dinoflagellates of the genera Prorocentrum and Dinophysis. Consumption of okadaic acid in contaminated shellfish results in a syndrome known as diarrheic shellfish poisoning (DSP) which is characterized by severe gastrointestinal symptoms. Our lab was the first to identify human metabolites of OA as potential biomarkers of exposure.
